Mary Cowern, Head of Wales at Cymru Versus Arthritis, reflects on the recent National 3Ps Conference.
THE 3PS PROGRAMME
The 3Ps programme is a Welsh Government initiative designed to support people in making informed decisions about their health care. It also equips them with the skills to manage their health while waiting for treatment. The 3Ps are: to ‘Promote’ improved health behaviours, ‘Prevent’ worsening health, and ‘Prepare’ for treatment & recovery.
PARTNERSHIP WORKING
Collaboration is the cornerstone of successful outcomes across the voluntary sector. At the conference, it was encouraging to see just how deeply partnership working is embedded in the 3Ps programme’s delivery. For example:
- The self-care team within Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board works with patients requiring arthroplasty surgery to help them prepare for their procedures while waiting.
- North Wales County Voluntary Councils work with the local health board and voluntary organisations on sharing learning and information, enabling those waiting for operations to make healthier lifestyle choices.
- Cardiff and Vale University Health Board offer a workshop to people waiting for orthopaedic surgery. This workshop emphasises the value of patients working in partnership with care providers on their health and care.
VERSUS ARTHRITIS
From the outset, Versus Arthritis has been actively involved with the Welsh Government’s 3Ps policy team, not just observing, but co-creating. We’ve been there from the beginning, helping shape what has become a nationally recognised success.
One of the highlights of the conference was the awards ceremony, where we were honoured to be part of the judging panel. The standard of entries was incredibly high, showcasing innovative approaches and genuine commitment from Health Boards to embed the 3Ps principles in their work.
LIVING WELL WHILE WAITING
Back when waiting lists started to surge, we partnered with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in Wales to call on the Welsh Government and Health Boards to provide urgent support. That call helped spark the development of the 3Ps programme – a reminder that real change often begins with collaboration and a shared sense of urgency.
This initiative is not about quick fixes, it’s about meaningful support. As someone who has personally waited three years for a hip replacement, I understand the difference this kind of programme can make. 3Ps helps people live well while they wait, with dignity, support, and better outcomes.
THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP
No single stakeholder holds all the answers. But when people, professionals, organisations and communities come together with a shared purpose, we can design and deliver joined-up services that truly meet people’s needs. 3Ps is a clear demonstration of how powerful and effective that approach can be.
Partnership working shouldn’t be an afterthought, it should be the blueprint. As we look to the future, let’s continue to work with innovation and inspiration, empowering thousands of people across Wales to live their best lives. Personally and professionally, I’m incredibly proud to be part of the 3Ps journey.
