In May, Marjana Khatun-Kootin, Grants Support Officer at WCVA, attended the 20th anniversary celebration of EYST Wales.
Founded by Momena Ali, EYST (Ethnic Minorities and Youth Support Team Wales) has flourished into an award-winning organisation, supporting ethnic minority young people to families and individuals of all ages Wales wide.
At the beginning of May 2025, I had the absolute pleasure of attending the 20th anniversary celebration of EYST Wales – and what an inspiring afternoon it was.
BRINGING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER
The event was hosted at the stunning Brangwyn Hall in Swansea, bringing together a vibrant mix of supporters, staff, and beneficiaries from across Wales. As someone from Swansea, the very city where EYST began its journey in 2005, it was deeply moving to witness the incredible impact this organisation has made on diverse young people and families throughout Wales over the past two decades.
The afternoon was filled with powerful speeches, moving video tributes and heartfelt moments that highlighted the passion and resilience behind EYST’s mission. One of the standout moments for me was hearing from Momena, EYST’s founder. Her story was not only inspiring but a potent reminder of why this work is so vital.
It was incredibly touching to see her honoured with a beautiful tribute and the recognition she so richly deserves.
INFLUENTIAL VOICES
We also heard from a range of influential voices, including former CEO Rocio Cifuentes, now the Children’s Commissioner for Wales, as well as Shehla Khan, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Jane Hutt, Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, and a lovely video message from the First Minister of Wales, Eluned Morgan. Each speaker highlighted the profound and lasting impact EYST has had across communities in Wales.
Beyond the speeches, the event was filled with joy and plenty of delicious food, all wrapped in a warm atmosphere of community, belonging, and shared purpose. It was the kind of gathering that reminds you why grassroots work matters and how collective action can truly transform lives.
Congratulations to everyone at EYST Wales on 20 years of tireless, life-changing work. Here’s to the next 20 and beyond!
