With interest in volunteering set to rise, organisations are being encouraged to promote their roles on Volunteering Wales and reach new audiences.
A CHANCE TO BE PART OF HISTORY
With the Tour de France Grand Départ coming to the UK in 2027, and a major stage taking place in Wales, there is a unique opportunity not only for individuals, but for voluntary organisations to engage new volunteers and showcase the impact of volunteering.
The third stage of the men’s race will take place on 4 July 2027, starting in Welshpool and finishing in Cardiff, passing through towns, valleys, and iconic landscapes along the way. The event will bring significant national and international attention to Wales – and with it, increased public interest in getting involved.
VOLUNTEERS AT THE HEART OF THE EVENT
Around 1,000 volunteers will be needed to support the event in Wales, helping to welcome visitors, support spectators, and manage activities along the route.
While these roles are an exciting opportunity in themselves, they are also expected to generate wider interest in volunteering. This presents a key moment for organisations to connect with people who are inspired by the event and looking to get more involved in their communities.
BUILDING SKILLS AND CONFIDENCE
Major events like the Tour de France can act as a springboard for people to start or return to volunteering. As individuals build skills, confidence and connections through event roles, many will be keen to continue volunteering beyond the day itself.
Voluntary organisations can play a crucial role in sustaining this momentum by offering meaningful follow-on opportunities that reflect people’s interests, including community-based, sport, and cycling-related roles.
CREATING A LASTING VOLUNTEERING LEGACY
WCVA is working with Welsh Government to ensure that the Tour de France delivers a strong and lasting legacy for volunteering in Wales.
Volunteering Wales, the national platform that connects people with volunteer roles, is expected to see increased traffic as a result of promoting the volunteer roles associated with the event. If you are looking to fill volunteer roles, particularly those linked to community activity, wellbeing, sport, and cycling, now is a great time to upload them to the platform.
By doing this, it could help turn a one-off moment of excitement into long-term engagement, strengthening volunteering across Wales and ensuring the benefits of the event are felt well beyond 2027.

Applications for Tour de France volunteering roles are open from 27 May to 1 September 2026.
