Little Lounge – supporting the local community

The Comic Relief Organisational Growth Grant helped Little Lounge grow and serve the community while launching their first Community Hub.

Little Lounge, a small charity in the Cynon Valley, promotes the well-being of children and families in Cilfynydd and across Pontypridd through various projects like the Baby Group, Outdoor Adventures, and Find your Voice Equine Therapy.

Initially formed as a baby and toddler group in 2015, Little Lounge grew steadily. By 2022, they secured a long-term lease and £110,000 in funding to renovate their new premises.

As the founder, Katie, transitioned into the role of CEO, the organisation needed a Business Manager to support its growth. With help from the Comic Relief Organisational Growth Grant, they hired Emma to manage finances and help oversee the setup of an Eco Pantry and coffee shop at the new hub.

OPENING THE BASEMENT

In spring 2023, Little Lounge opened The Basement, a multi-use community hub offering children’s activity groups, parenting support, and an Eco Pantry providing affordable, refillable produce.

The renovation faced delays due to rising costs and supply chain challenges. The organisation had to apply for additional funding to make up for the shortfall, making monitoring highly intensive. The additional capacity funded by the Comic Relief grant was essential in overseeing the management of this capital project and getting the hub up and running.

SECURING FURTHER FUNDING

The Comic Relief grant allowed Little Lounge to improve how they monitor their community engagement and assess the impact of their work. This helped them adapt services to local needs and report back to funders more effectively.

With Emma managing finances, the organisation became more proactive in their funding strategy, securing £75,000 from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund for salaries and capital costs.

They were also able to take advantage of funding from the Landfill Disposals Tax Communities Scheme to hire a part-time Outdoor Project facilitator for the Little Eco Gardens project, which educates the community on growing food, biodiversity, and sustainability.

RHIANNON’S STORY

Rhiannon is a long-time volunteer with Little Lounge who used to attend the Baby Group when it first opened. After a difficult period and some time away, she came back to the group in 2017, gradually becoming a key volunteer. She also played an essential role in establishing the Community Pantry and now volunteers on both projects.

Volunteering has helped her manage anxiety, build confidence, and achieve a Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate. The Baby Group became a ‘safe space’ for Rhiannon, giving her purpose and a vital role in the community.
