Gift Aid Awareness Day is an opportunity to share the enormous impact Gift Aid has on beneficiaries and communities, as well as promoting public understanding.
This year, Gift Aid Awareness Day is happening on Thursday 1 October 2026, part of the #TickTheBox campaign which recognises donors’ generosity, celebrates impact, while getting excited about what more we can achieve together.
WHAT IS GIFT AID AND HOW CAN IT HELP?
Gift Aid is a tax relief for charities in the UK which increases the value of donations. When UK taxpayers donate, the charity can claim an additional 25% of the value of the donation. That means for every £10 donation made to the charity, they can receive £12.50. All of this is at no extra cost to the donor.
Each year, the campaign highlights the importance of Gift Aid as a vital source of income for charities. Gift Aid was worth £1.88bn a year to UK charities in 2025/2026, up 10% on the previous year. It’s a huge amount, but it could be even more!
MAKING SURE PEOPLE #TICKTHEBOX
We want every eligible charity to make the most of this vital tax relief, and reduce the amount of Gift Aid that goes unclaimed every year, which is around £560m. On Gift Aid Awareness Day it’s important to show how diverse and crucial the voluntary sector is and how together we positively impact millions of people every day.
Gift Aid Awareness Day and the #TickTheBox campaign give charities great opportunities to thank those donors that do tick the Gift Aid box for their donations. It also raises awareness to current and potential donors, supporters and volunteers on how valuable Gift Aid can be to an organisation and its beneficiaries.
This could be a good time to remind your volunteers in charity shops and at fundraising events to encourage people to sign up for Gift Aid, or to offer a new volunteer role to support your Gift Aid claims.
WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR?
This year, the Charity Finance Group (CFG) are launching the Back the Future of Gift Aid campaign, calling on the government to modernise the Gift Aid system and unlock more time and money for charities.
A CHANCE TO LEARN MORE
CFG are hosting a one-hour webinar on Thursday 1 October, to provide you with the latest updates and guidance regarding Gift Aid and allow charities the opportunity to ask any burning questions they have.
