Gift Aid Awareness Day 2025

Published : 02/10/25 | Categories: News |

Gift Aid Awareness Day is back for 2025, providing an opportunity for charities to promote Gift Aid and increase the value of their donations.

This year, Gift Aid Awareness Day is happening on Thursday 9 October 2025 and part of the #TickTheBox campaign, which is sharing the enormous impact Gift Aid has on beneficiaries and communities and promoting public understanding of Gift Aid.

WHAT IS GIFT AID?

Gift Aid is a tax relief for charities in the UK which increases the value of donations. When UK taxpayers donate, the charity is able to claim an additional 25% of the value of the donation. That means for every £10 donation made to the charity, they can receive £12.50. All of this is at no extra cost to the donor.

Each year, the campaign highlights the importance of Gift Aid as a vital source of income for charities. Gift Aid was worth £1.7bn a year to UK charities in 2024/2025. It’s a huge amount, but it could be even more! According to the Charities Aid Foundation Giving Report 2025, more than three quarters of donors say they ʻalwaysʼ or ʻsometimesʼ add Gift Aid to their donations. Most people, whether donors or not, believe that Gift Aid is essential to charities and that, when appropriate, people should be encouraged to add Gift Aid to their donations.

MAKING SURE PEOPLE #TICKTHEBOX

We want every eligible charity to make the most of this vital tax relief, and reduce the amount of Gift Aid that goes unclaimed every year of around £560m. On Gift Aid Awareness Day it’s important to show how diverse and crucial the voluntary sector is and how together we positively impact millions of people every day.

Gift Aid Awareness Day and the #TickTheBox campaign give charities great opportunities to thank those donors that do tick the Gift Aid box for their donations. It also raises awareness to current and potential donors, supporters and volunteers on how valuable Gift Aid can be to an organisation and its beneficiaries.

This could be a good time to remind your volunteers in charity shops and at fundraising events to encourage people to sign up for Gift Aid, or to offer a new volunteer role to support your Gift Aid claims.

This year, the Charity Finance group will be hosting their annual webinar on the 9 October 2025 alongside HMRC and other expert partners. The online event will highlight ways you can maximise your Gift Aid income.
