As we look back on the 2022-25 funding period of the Wales and Africa Grant Scheme, we are proud to share the remarkable impact these projects have achieved.

The Wales and Africa Grant Scheme supports partnerships between Welsh and African organisations to tackle global challenges, share skills, and promote mutual learning.

HEADLINE IMPACT

In this funding period the Wales and Africa Grant Scheme awarded £867,999 in grants to 47 projects, improving well-being for more than 45,000 people. Over 4,080 volunteers contributed, creating 329 new links between Welsh and African communities.

The impact spans four strategic themes:

  • Health – Improving access to healthcare and strengthening professional skills through international training exchanges.
  • Sustainable livelihoods – Supporting food security and enterprise projects, while Welsh partners gain insight into global sustainability challenges.
  • Lifelong learning – Enhancing education for thousands in Africa and engaging 48,877 Welsh school children in global citizenship activities.
  • Environment and climate change – Linking climate action in Wales with renewable energy and tree planting projects in Africa.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

Behind these numbers are inspiring stories of change. Welsh surgeons worked alongside colleagues at Panzi Hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo to develop new surgical training models for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence. The experience enriched their teaching and practice in Wales.

Constructing wash facilities for 300 pupils and teachers in Uganda gave Welsh engineering students valuable hands-on experience and prepared them for future international projects.

Environmental initiatives also created opportunities for Welsh communities. For example, Treeflights’ Climate Shops in Wales reduced waste and raised funds to plant trees in Kenya, linking climate action at home with global impact.
